HSK 5 (Level 5) is the second "advanced" tier and the most common entry requirement for full-degree undergraduate and graduate programs at mainland Chinese universities. It is also the level most often requested by Chinese employers for white-collar roles that involve regular Mandarin communication. A learner who passes HSK 5 can read newspapers and watch television in Chinese with some help, hold extended professional conversations, and write structured short essays on familiar topics.
The exam jumps again from HSK 4: 2500 words (more than double), listening at the speed of real native conversation, longer reading passages drawn from real magazine and newspaper content, and an essay section that asks you to summarize a short text or write a structured 80-character paragraph in response to a prompt.
On HSK Ace you can take a full HSK 5 mock under real timing, hear native audio at full speed, and submit your essays for AI rubric grading. Mocks are free; detailed feedback, unlimited mock attempts, and AI essay review are unlocked with one-time Shells — no subscription.
Total: ~125 minutes · Pass: 180 out of 300 (most universities require 180; some require 210 or higher) · 2500 essential words
